About AnyNameMeaning
We built this because finding the real story behind a name should not require digging through a dozen half-finished websites.
Names carry more weight than most people realise. They are the first thing someone knows about you, sometimes before they ever meet you. A name can point to a culture, a religion, a family tradition, or just something a parent found beautiful on a sleepless night while scrolling through a list on their phone. Whatever the origin, names matter — and we built AnyNameMeaning because we believe people deserve to understand them properly.
We started this site after running into the same frustrating experience over and over: looking up a name online and getting a one-line answer that felt either incomplete or outright wrong. “James means supplanter.” Fine. But supplanter of what? From which language? How did it travel from Hebrew into Latin into English? What has it meant to different cultures along the way?
We wanted answers with actual depth behind them, and we kept not finding them in one place. So we built that place.
What We Cover
AnyNameMeaning publishes the meanings, origins, and cultural backgrounds of names from across the world. Arabic names, Hebrew names, Latin and Greek names, Urdu and Sanskrit names, Persian, Turkish, English, French — we try to cover as wide a range as we reasonably can without sacrificing accuracy in the process.
Each name entry is written to be genuinely useful. We explain where the name comes from, which languages it passed through, how it has been used across different cultures and time periods, and what it tends to mean to communities that carry it today. Names are not just words. They are little pieces of history. We try to make sure that history comes through in what we write.
We also have a filter for male and female names, and a search function that works even when you are not entirely sure of the spelling. Type what you remember, and we will do our best to find the right match.
The Age & Life Statistics Tool
One of us built a small tool to calculate how many days we had been alive. It started as a personal curiosity project, and then we added it to the site almost as an afterthought. It turned out to be one of the most popular things we have ever published.
Age & Life Statistics Calculator
Enter a birth date and find out your age in days, weeks, and months — plus the day of the week you were born, how many days until your next birthday, and a few other figures people find surprisingly interesting to know. It gives you a different way to look at time and where you are in it.
Who Runs This Site
AnyNameMeaning is run by a small team. We are not a large database company with automated systems generating thousands of pages a day. We read through what we publish. We check sources. We update entries when we find something wrong or something better.
We started this because we genuinely care about names and the stories behind them. Names connect people to their families, their cultures, and their histories. When someone comes to this site looking for a name, they usually have a real reason — a parent choosing a name for a new baby, a writer trying to find the right name for a character, someone trying to understand a part of their heritage they do not know much about. We take those reasons seriously.
How We Handle Accuracy
Name etymology is genuinely complicated. The same name often has multiple documented origins, different spellings across cultures, and meanings that have shifted over hundreds of years. We try to be honest about that complexity instead of pretending there is always one clean answer.
When scholars disagree on an origin, we say so. When a name has multiple plausible roots, we explain each one. We would rather give you a nuanced, honest answer than a confident wrong one.
What We Are Working On
We are always adding names and improving existing entries. We are also working to expand our coverage of name traditions that are often underrepresented in English-language name databases — names from West Africa, Southeast Asia, Indigenous cultures from various regions, and other traditions that deserve more documentation than they typically get.
If there is a name you have searched for and could not find here, use the Contact page to suggest it. We read those messages, and many of our additions over the years have come directly from people writing in to tell us what is missing.
AnyNameMeaning is completely free to use. No account required, no paywall, no subscription. We are funded by non-intrusive advertising, which keeps the site running and the content growing.
Thank you for visiting. We hope you find what you came here for — and maybe learn something you were not expecting along the way.
